The Function of Ornamentation,  self-Similarity​​​​​​​
It is interesting to revisit the master/slave relationship between function and ornamentation in industrial design. Functionalism has always taken a dominant position. That is why the product is always concise and user-friendly, but the same. On the contrary, patterns were considered ornaments and accessories of the product. The development of 3d printing can quickly produce objects with complex structures and appearances. In addition to functionalism, 3D printing offers more opportunities.

Ornamentations can be independent products such as decoration and jewelry.
From pattern to structure -- Self-similarity​​​​​​​

Patterns can be used as the basis for complex structures.
Many forms in nature exhibit self-similarity, and as a result, it is commonly held to be an intrinsically aesthetic property. The reuse of a single, basic form to create many levels of meta forms mimics nature’s tendency towards parsimony and redundancy. These structures are beautiful in form and also have good abilities in their structural strength and longevity.
The ubiquity of self-similarity in nature hints at an underlying order and algorithm and suggests ways to enhance the aesthetic (and perhaps structural) composition of human-created forms. That means: in design, we can use basic, self-similar elements to create interesting organizations at multiple levels of scale, and it can become a new design language as opposed to functionalism. 3D printing technology has great potential in this area. Because it is additive manufacturing. When the structure is very complex, there is also no waste of material.
